As of Jan 31 2013 A new law went into effect called the the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (“DMCA”) . In the nut shell it is no longer to do without your carriers permission. Permission would always be in writing if given which I assume will take a lot of work to get if at all.
The way it is written Unlocking is in a major grey area under the DMCA. The law was put in place and supposed to protect creative works, but it's often been misused by electronics makers and Carriers to block competition and kill the used phone markets which in return increase both their bottom lines and keep share holders very happy.
Just imagine if this happened to the auto industry and you could no longer buy or sell used cars only new ones. Or if you could no longer sell or buy a used home only a new one.
Home builders and auto manufactures profits would sky rocket but the consumer would suffer. Just think what that would do to our already hurting ecconomy. We do and never really have unlocked phones but Why single out the Cellular industry and mandate someone that pays hundreds of dollies for a smart phone can not do what ever they want with their purchase or if they elect to sell it why can't the buyer have the right to deactivate the phone they just purchased on the carrier of their choice??????????
